Ben Levy: Autocross is more than just a cool subculture
Autocross is a place to safely drive as fast as you want around a specially designated track. After five practice races, the driver does an actual race between himself and the clock. Yes, himself: participating women are rare.
You can drive 100 miles per hour or even more on the track.
It’s a better choice than doing that on I-95.
Autocross is an international sport with trophies and a website. Locally, BB&T center by Sawgrass Mills hosts monthly competitions. We watch each other’s driving skill and car handling. I race my 2006 Suburu WRX STI.
Autocross drivers know a lot about cars.
The guys who are blowhards and braggarts know to stay away.
